The Vision for Marina Bay

"The centrepiece of our redevelopment of the city is Marina Bay......we're going to extend the (existing) city seamlessly into the new downtown. There's water in the bay, there are gardens and we will have a Garden City by the Bay......and the city must reflect the spirit of our people - well conceived, vigorously executed, restrained but high quality, every aspect thought through, constantly improved and remade in search of excellence".

Singapore's Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong in Singapore's National Day Rally 2005 Speech "A Vibrant City called home"

Objective of Workshop:

"The main objective of this workshop is to make a contribution to thinking about the design of the 'Gardens by the Bay' competition. While the formal processes of selection of designer teams and ultimately selection of designs will progress according to the announced schedules, this workshop should not inhibit Singapore-based designers and the relevant individuals from discussing, proposing and propagating their ideas regarding the gardens.  We all owe it to Singapore and ourselves to collectively discuss ideas that have been cogitating in our minds regarding the quality of life in the city and its spaces, and to publish them for the general edification of our fellow citizens and Singapore residents.  If our ideas can make a difference to the outcome of the design process, we have done our part in developing and contributing ideas as a demonstration of our quest towards excellence for the city we live in."
